Badger vaccine deployment project
Latest news
- 28 September 2009: Application process for farmers is now open
Farmers in the project catchment areas can now apply to take part in the project to have badgers on their land vaccinated or attend a meeting to find out more information.
A Badger Vaccine Deployment Project is being funded by Defra to trap and vaccinate badgers against TB for five years in six areas worst affected by bovine TB in cattle in England.
The project will develop practical know-how for vaccinating badgers, identify and address practical issues, and help to move towards the long-term goal of an oral badger vaccine. Although this is not a scientific trial, Defra will be looking at the number of cattle herd TB breakdowns in the areas for any changes in cattle disease trends.
Defra will have overall responsibility and Fera will manage the project until vaccination has been phased in across the six areas and all contractors have been fully trained.
