The UK has the highest interception rate for pests and diseases on plant material of any EU Member State. This impressive and reassuring statistic is largely thanks to Fera’s Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI).
Always looking at ways to speed up and improve the service, PHSI has been trialling tablet platforms across the country to see if they are an effective way to enter and retrieve inspection information. These So far over 450 inspections have been recorded using this technology with generally very good feedback. Each device has a 7” touch sensitive screen and the whole unit fits easily into a pocket.
Inspectors have commented that the technology provides significant time savings. . Recent ideas for further usage include a host identification application during monitoring and eradication campaigns. In September PHSI will be holding a workshop at Fera’s York site to generate further ideas and demonstrate the technology to other Fera teams.
