Angular leaf spot on Strawberry

Angular leaf spot (Xanthomonas fragariae) is a serious disease of strawberry which is listed in EC plant health legislation, with specific import and plant passport requirements. The first UK outbreaks of the disease were confirmed in 2004 in fruiting crops at two farms in Kent and one in Scotland. A further find was confirmed in 2007. In all cases the plants concerned were derived from material grown in the Netherlands.

The disease is locally established in Italy and Spain, as well as the USA, several South American countries and some countries in Africa and Asia. There have also been findings in Germany, France, Greece and the Netherlands.Strawberry growers are reminded of the need to take precautions against the risk of introducing bacterial diseases on imported material and the publicity material provides information about the symptoms and development of this particular disease.
